ESSENTIAL OIL OVERVIEW: Black spruce oil has a light yellow-tint. It’s considered to be a top note, though I feel it come through on the skin after it has had a minute to adjust to its new setting. It takes its time, does not rush, wants to give you an experience. The oil is extracted from the bark and branches of beautiful black spruce trees. The experience of smelling Black Spruce oil is akin to walking thru a foggy pine forest, enchanted by the crunch of needles below your feet and the evergreen lushness filling your eyes, breath coming easier and clearer. Magic. There is a darker aspect to this oil, compared to other pine oils. It invites you to sniff deeper and longer, invoking mystique and a knowing that the universe is queer and infinite.

To me, BS is nonbinary and help other queers feel comfortable being in their queer skin. As a queer person, it has helped me feel electrified in my queerness. That I can wear whatever I want. It has taught me if I'm going to get dressed and “made up," do it for me, first and foremost. Because of BS, I know that I appreciate and nurture my queer magic and existence the most, because who else? And BS teaches me to treat myself with the respect and the wondrousness that I deserve.
Black Spruce is aquarian, strange, and mesmerizing in its visionary thoughts and ideas. It definitely carries some mercurial energy, assisting you in saying your genius ideas and desires out loud and pursuing a queerer, more accepting world. Black Spruce is not afraid to “go there,” bringing up topics that might be seen as risque, blasphemous, or dark. They do not do this to cause mayhem, but to encourage open, earnest conversations and to navigate conflict with a deep sense of self-worth and collective care.

PLANT AT THE PARTY:
Black Spruce comes to the party at unpredictable times. Sometimes they are the first one to arrive and the last to leave, other times they are the last to arrive and then leave within a few minutes. They feel no sense of obligation to be on anyone’s timeframe beyond their own, and the other party-goers appreciate their nonchalance.
Black Spruce brings a record to share at the party. Always a band no one has heard of, but immediately has everyone swaying, bobbing their heads. Black Spruce stands off to the side, arms crossed with a drink between their fingers, usually a whiskey with an ice cube that offers a nice clink sound. People approach Black Spruce–surrounds them, wanting to talk about the newest documentary or the Italian restaurant with the great meatballs down the street. BS is always kind and loves to listen, and sometimes opens up, but often craves a moment alone so will retreat to the balcony to stare at the moon often.
Black Spruce and Tobacco are good friends, often settling into a friendly debate in the corner of the room, or showing each other pictures on their phones of their latest projects. They often travel together because they trust each other and know they can hold silence/go their separate ways during their travels.
Black Spruce and Jasmine also like to share chats and intimate conversations with each other. They are both soft spoken and appreciate radical art, deeply. They like to check out new galleries together.
At the end of the night, if BS is still around, they will join in on any late night jam sessions, playing the piano with grace and adding their sultry voice to the mix.
BLACK SPRUCE AND THE HOLY FAM:
I think of Black Spruce as a Mary Magdalene (she/they) oil because MM is just ~so cool.~ They know their path and even when things fall apart, they have an unwavering knowing of their worth, and they move (or rest) accordingly. She also knows at the end of the day, she appreciates her own magic and queer spirit the most, and how abundant and lovely it is to be in relationship, first and foremost, with yourself.
