ESSENTIAL OIL OVERVIEW: Research the lemon/lemon oil and find a LONG list of its physical benefits. Lemon has a history of being a friendly, helpful plant! Preventing scurvy in sailors and freshening the air during periods of illness, lemon is HERE FOR YOU BABES. It’s truly a “bff” oil because it wants to perk you up, keep you healthy, and bring you some joy. The oil is extracted from the skin of the lemon and speaking of skin, be careful if you apply it to any bare skin exposed to sunlight, because it can cause really bad burns. When sniffing lemon oil, I feel it reach up into my headspace, brightening my thoughts and clearing any residual fogginess from dreams or the inner critic. Yeah, it can shut the inner critic right up! Many people use lemon oil when cleaning (I love to drop 1-5 drops in the tub and rub before a bath–just be sure to rinse it), and thus it can be hard to imagine it as a scent you want in a perfume if you don’t want to smell like “clean house.” But I find it softens and turns yummy when paired with geranium or vanilla tones like amber and benzoin. Almost like a sweet lemon bar or some lemonade! Reach for lemon, the fruit or the oil, when you need a lil’ pick-me-up.

LEMON MAGIC: I include lemon in several of my perfume potions because it’s just so happy! It brightens any scent and is an excellent top note–I imagine people spritzing my perfumes with lemon and the lemon note being a host/ess like, “Hey babe! Welcome to the perfume! We are so excited to adorn you and give you this sensual experience. Remember, you’re cute and sexy–go have fun!” Just like, the ultimate hype scent (alongside geranium). Bring some lemon into your life when you need an extra dose of confidence, or when you are ready to release some grief and/or disappointment and feel a sense of hope and optimism again. Very 9 of cups and 6 of wands.

PLANT AT THE PARTY: You’ve probably already guessed that lemon is an avid party-goer, full of energy and optimism. They love to wear yellow crop tops and floral bottoms. They make a beeline for Geranium when they get there, exclaiming over how good “G” looks. They spend the rest of the night boppin’ around to all the other plant guests, finding something to giggle about with each of them (even Black Spruce!). They bring a big tray of delicious dessert to share and are THAT party-goer who insists everyone grabs seconds (“you know you want another!”). If no one stops them, they will replay the same three party songs over and over again. They stay at the party until they’re literally kicked out, and then they find an after party and Geranium joins them, no hesitations. The two wake up the next morning and are ready to brunch.

LEMON AND THE HOLY FAM: To me, Lemon embodies both Jesus’s cheerful, hype nature and Joseph’s steady optimism and hope. So here is a little fanfic snippet inspired by these holy witches.

Jesus promised to help clean the bathrooms if Joseph braids their hair first, so Joseph is determined to learn how. As Jesus settles between his legs and begins to gab about Mary Mag’s new bass guitar (“I really wish she would have gone with the pink finish but she never listens to me and always buys everything in black”), Joseph splits one half of hair into 3 parts, and beings to twist and fold and count–just like he saw on the YouTube video–his tongue sticking out in concentration. Joseph finishes, tabs a bit of lemon oil on the ends, and gives Jesus the handheld mirror to inspect. They give Joseph a fake but still loving smile, insisting with gumption the plaits “look really, really good pops!” Joseph doesn’t mind the white lie. He relishes the time with Jesus, knowing all the practice means more sweet, quality time with them. Joseph hands Jesus a little spray bottle with diluted lemon and spruce oils, winking as Jesus sighs and kneels to scrub the bathroom tub.

LEMON AND HAIL MARY PERFUMERY: Currently I have TWO scents available featuring lemon essential oil: LUST (my newest scent) and PRIDE. A coincidence that both of these perfumes are part of my 7 Deadly Scents collection? Perhaps not…lemon brings its feisty optimism to these perfumes, assuring wearers that experiencing both pride and lust is healthy and human! Shop now and connect with the brightness and playfulness of lemon.

Thanks for reading, scent-sual babes!

Your Perfumer,

Mary Adelle
