ROASTED COCONUT

Keywords: GENEROUS. SIMPLE PLEASURES. PLAY/WORK BALANCE. NOURISHMENT.

ESSENTIAL OIL OVERVIEW: Roasted coconut oil comes from the pulp of the roasted nut. Because it’s roasted, there is a toasty, extra sweet feel to it, and there is a slight yellow tint to it. I imagine the biggest difference between unroasted coconut vs. roasted coconut is kinda like roasted almonds vs unroasted almonds…there might be more nutrients in regular coconut essential oil, but the roasted coconut has a more potently sweet fragrance, evoking the tropics and sweet beachy evenings. Known for being like, the MOST useful plant, regular coconut oil has a plethora of benefits, including skincare benefits. Roasted coconut essential oil is a Yin oil, meaning it has a calming and grounding effect.

ROASTED COCO MAGIC: From the Gritman Guide to Essential Oils by Margaret Shehad, I learned “Coco” comes from Portuguese “coquo,” which means kid, due to the nut’s cute little face. So right there, you can intuit the spirit of this plant…playful, innocent but rascally, simple and open. The whole plant is pure magic bc every element can be used…the leaves, the stalk, the sap, husk, the nut, etc. This plant obviously wants to support you, deeply. To me, it has a deeply generative-generous vibe–a real “give and take” momentum. It can teach you both how to stand grounded in your resources, while also sharing them openly. It reminds you that “abundance” is within. I think you can see this in the way the oil rests…when not in use, it hardens and sinks into itself. When sparked with a little heat (and love), it melts and is ready to use. I used the keywords “play/work balance,” because I feel this plant essential oil truly enjoys its “job”--to be a part of potions that support and nourish people. But I also get the sense it enjoys just being–if we look at the palm plant, imagine it swaying in a beach breeze, looking over the ocean, the rustling creatures nearby, perhaps the laughing, relaxed people surrounding it. It’s just a chill AF plant, ready to be helpful while also enjoying its life and “purpose.” When I sniff and experience the roasted coconut oil, I automatically close my eyes and smile a little. It does something special…it’s not that all my worries go away or that I can avoid them, but they feel surmountable AND they feel, dare I say, natural? Like….life is full of worry and terror and trauma…it always will. BUT, you can still live it and seek pleasure and stay grounded as you navigate the worry and terror and trauma. Thank you, roasted coco!! <3

PLANT AT THE PARTY: Awww Roasted Coconut!! Their BFF is, of course, Lime. These two giggle together and pull little pranks on each other all night. Coconut comes ready to chat about their passions, their latest creative projects, their volunteer work. They love to stay involved in their community and want to talk to other plants about what THEY’VE been up to. They’re both enthusiastic but calm, steady, and grounding. To them, community care is essential and ever-inspiring. Patchouli often joins Coconut in the kitchen and together they plan future clothing swaps, food drives, beach clean-ups, both pulling out their phone calendars to schedule a coffee date to plan further (oh Coffee Oil is invited, too! <3). Coconut will be one of the last ones to leave that party (if not hosting), helping to clean up and then smoke w33d on the rooftop with the remaining plants. They are, quite simply, easy-peasy. Helpful, sweet, and open.

ROASTED COCONUT AND THE HOLY FAM: A little fanfic scene inspired by the scent of roasted coconut for your reading pleasure:

It’s Jesus’s favorite time of year…the summer seasonal clothing swap. They host a clothing swap in between each season of the year, but summertime swap is their favorite swap. Homemade cut-off jorts, slinky sun dresses, bikini tops, handkerchiefs, polka dots, silks, reds, oranges, strappy sandals. They end up taking home way more than they brought. They host at their home, in their sunny living room. They pick and arrange fresh peonies from their garden, placing them on shelves and sills in coke bottle vases. They drop a few drops of roasted coconut oil and lime oil into their diffuser. They bring out the Harry Styles albums (he’s so hot) and sink into the record player’s soft crackle. They set out a cooler full of Topo Chicos. And as they wait, they paint their nails a deep golden yellow, admiring its match to the bottle roasted coconut oil. They can’t wait for Mary Mag to get there…she promised she’d bring one of her old tube tops to swap.
