ESSENTIAL OIL OVERVIEW: When you google “geranium flower,” the definition that appears at the top of the page (at least MY search page) includes the word "ICONIC." And I think that aptly describes this plant, its essential oil and its effects/magic. There are several geranium flower species, such as rose, bourbon and Egyptian. Today we are talking about geranium rose, known for its particularly rosy scent. I personally do not smell rose in this oil–I smell juiciness. It’s like a flower that’s been soaked in a delicious tropical punch. Considered a “Yin” oil (so more relaxing and calming, rather than energizing), what’s really cool about geranium is that I’ve noticed it inspires easeful PLAY and calming ENERGY. So it has an integrated yin and yang effect. In my Gritman Guide to Essential Oils by Margaret Shehad, Shehad uses the term “divine nonchalance” when referring to geranium and that says it all. The whole plant is used and processed for the oil, so that means stem, root, leaves, and flower are all included in this little bottle of oil and thus it can speak to all different parts of our own body, spirit, and emotional landscape. It’s no secret I love geranium. Of my 8 signature perfumes, 4 of them include geranium. I can’t get enough of it!
GERANIUM ROSE MAGIC: They’re flirty. They’re messy. They’re courageous. They’re supportive. This flower will have you feelin’ yourself, navigating and dismissing shame and self-consciousness with aplomb. A great oil to connect with when you’d not only like to step into confidence, but for that step to feel easeful and natural. Geranium Rose does not doubt itself. It knows it has flaws, but it embraces its messy self, knowing full well its not for everyone and that’s okay. They’re still cute. They’re still worthy. GR is a wonderful oil for sweet friendship and community, particularly among friends or groups with vast differences. The plant celebrates differences and harmonizes personalities. While Geranium will always support you in speaking up for yourself and for what’s right, it also brings out the strength of the collective.
Geranium is not just about self and community love–it’s about the joy and pleasure one takes in oneself and in the beings and creatures surrounding them. Like, not only do you “love” your neighbor (P.S. maybe you don’t and that’s fine), but you also delight in your neighbor and their quirks and passions.

PLANT AT THE PARTY: Geranium Rose should be on your party VIP list, because I assure you, if you invite them, more plants (I mean, people), will show. Geranium will be late, but they will show up glam and glowing. Perhaps mismatched socks, or torn net stockings, or uneven eye liner…but they make the messiness look FAB bc they OWN IT. They 100% will start up the karaoke machine, maybe a bit too early but the other plants get into it due to Geranium’s enthusiasm–even Black Spruce, typically one of the party loners, will belt a song alongside GR…and that delights Geranium like no other. Geranium calls everyone “love” or “sweets” or “darling babe.” Even if you get annoyed by Geranium (like Jasmine sometimes does)…you love them unconditionally bc you know their heart genuinely loves you and wants the best for you. Geranium stays 'til the very end of the party, and gets several other plants to join them at a late night diner, where they promptly order choco chip pancakes.
GERANIUM ROSE AND THE HOLY FAM: Geranium Rose, to me, is Big Jesus Energy. BJE. Jesus wants the best for their community, just like Geranium. Jesus shows up as they are, gives hope and love to all, and, in my creative imagination, is stylish and glam, in a messy way, just like GR. I think one of the many things the bible/religious teachings get wrong about Jesus, or fail to recognize/talk about…is Jesus was joyful and playful. They felt connected to earth and its creatures and wanted to live a full life according to that connection, even if that meant standing firm in a belief discordant with the oppressive powers that be. Geranium Rose has offered me a way to reimagine–or in my opinion, accurately imagine–the ~vibe~ of Jesus. Flirty, queer, joyful, loving. Geranium Rose + Jesus Christ 5eva!!
